"They've got a fantastic blend of sound, the best I've heard in a long time." JOHN LENNON
"A very fine band." ELTON JOHN "Roger Chapman is, without doubt, one of the all-time great lead vocalists." BOB HARRIS
We all love a decent career spanning box set don’t we?
Not a shoddy 4-CD anthology in a digipak but 14 CDs housed in an actual BOX along with a delightfully designed 72 page hardback book, individually numbered, strictly limited and signed by the lead singer. Snapper Music have blazed the trail for Limited Edition Collector’s Box Sets since lifting off with the incredibly well received (and instant sell out) Sign Of The 3 Eyed Men – the mammoth 13th Floor Elevators’ box set (and its vinyl set counterpart Music Of The Spheres, which won the coveted AIM 2012 award for Special Catalogue Release). Once Upon A Time looks set to do the same for Leicester’s incendiary underground faves Family; mastered, packaged and produced to the exact same high standards that have become Snapper’s hallmark. Family’s 1968 masterpiece Music In A Doll’s House is certainly one of the finest debut albums ever released. Produced by Traffic’s Dave Mason and the legendary Jimmy Miller (The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, The Rolling Stones) the Leicester lads combined Mellotron, strings and violin with the more standard harmonicas, saxes and acoustic and electric guitar – including ferocious, acidic fuzztone blasts from the almighty John Whitney – to create a unique and scintillating brew which they would continue building on throughout their short yet varied career, taking clear forays into mellow rustic pop, unhinged funk and cerebral heaviness… all sounding like Family marked by the most un rock star front man in history: Roger Chapman. The sexualised performances of the Stones and Led Zep may have eclipsed Family, as did the prog rock giants with their light shows and theatricality, but the eccentric stagecraft of Roger Chapman and the immense, never predictable skill of the band resonate louder than ever. Family were certainly one of the very first underground rock groups who combined folk, blues, jazz and other disparate influences, focusing on albums as an art form rather than a sales pitch for singles. Yet they were never engulfed by pomposity. Gentle tunes like ‘My Friend The Sun’, to this day, sound adorable on lunchtime radio, as timeless as the shifting of summer into autumn whilst elsewhere Family can rock hard with the best of them or throw surreal curve balls at the blues in a manner that rivals Captain Beefheart. Containing all of the band’s albums from the career defining late ’60s albums Music In A Doll’s House (now including the exceptional pre-album psych-pop single ‘Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens’/’Gypsy Woman’) and Family Entertainment through 1970’s A Song For Me and Anyway, 1971’s Old Songs New Songs and Fearless, 1972’s Bandstand and 1973’s It’s Only A Movie. The set is further bolstered with a 1971 concert, Family Live (originally released in 2003), and a 2-CD set of unreleased demos and alt takes Once Upon A Time And More – culled from the Anyway, Fearless, Bandstand and It’s Only A Movie album sessions and remastered from original tapes that had lain undisturbed in Roger Chapman’s loft until 2012. This two disc set captures the hitherto unheard work-in-progress of some of Family’s most popular tracks along with priceless in-studio banter. Finally three singles from 1971 and 1973 are also duplicated in CD single format, all housed in their original artwork. Then there’s that super hard back book penned by Family website master Pete Feenstra and a separate magazine styled recreation of a contemporary music weekly featuring historic articles and reviews. Further still, each box comes with a hand signed certificate of authenticity from Roger Chapman himself. Totally schizophrenic, playful and at times intimidating. It’s all here. Once Upon A Time is the definitive last word on Family. Pre-orders available only from the official website www.familyonceuponatime.com FAMILY Once Upon A Time
